With reading these myths and learning more about Greek culture, i learned more about truth. It showed where we got a lot of our present day culture. The morals and the drama in the myths are the same as that of today. In the myth about Narcissus, he gets full of himself and falls in love with himself. That is no different from now when people get really arrogant and think they are superior to everyone else. Also the drama with Zeus sleeping around and Hera getting mad, is similar to how men cheat on their wives and the wives get really mad. Truth was explained a lot in the ancient Greek culture and helped me understand it more
I learned a lot about truth in Lord of the Flies about truth. I learned about human nature and how people become savage, and how it applied to my life. Like how girls get savage about a guy they all like or something like that. I also learned how innocent people can get killed or just made fun of like Simon and Piggy; Simon being accidently killed from doing nothing but looking out for the boys when he finds out what the beast is, and Piggy being made fun of for asthma and being chubby and later being killed when all he did was contribute with his intelligence and knowledge.
To Kill A Mockingbird taught me a lot about truth and growing up. Jem and Scout mature a lot in this novel and they learn about things that most kids their age would not learn. Jem's thinking changes when he experiences the prejudice in their town first hand when Atticus is Tom's lawyer. Also, Scout matures in different ways as well. She learns about the sexism that she will always have in her life being a woman and also about the racism. I learned the same thing that Jem and Scout learned. Truth is not always fair.
In Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens, I learned about truth and expectations. Everyone has expectations for themselves and sometimes they are just too much and the truth is you cannot fulfill them. Pip has many expectations that he puts on himself and others put on him which makes things overwhelming. Pip also grows up a lot on this story as he becomes a gentleman and is dynamic. He starts out loving where he is from and not wanting it to change. Then he does not even appreciate the people that raised him once he inherits all the money. But then he realizes the truth and thanks the people that have always been there for him and begs for forgiveness.
In Of Mice and Men, by John Steinbeck, i learned about truth in dreams and many other themes. There are not many characters but each one represents the truth about something in society and the world. Crooks represents the racial disability among people, Lennie is the mental disability, Candy is the physical disability, and Curley's wife is the sexual disability in society. They show the loneliness they have and how they struggle making their dreams come true. Little did Jenny know Mark Walker was living in California at the same time, planning to go to New York as well.He was nineteen years old and had also been born without the designer gene and had no idea there was another human living in America.“Ready to go?” He asked his stuffed animal bear, Roger, who did not answer of course.Mark was used to this.He gathered all of his things, choosing a Ferrari of course, and headed out on his long journey to New York.He was not aware that he was only 2,000 miles behind Jenny Martin. Mark had been driving for days.He had made it to Colorado and was looking for a safe place to sleep.“This looks like a nice place, Roger” he said as he opened the door to the abandoned house. He went inside and looked around for some food. What he found instead was a tape-recorder and a video next to it.Mark put the video into the TV and Jenny Martin’s face appeared on the screen. He listened to the recording and was shocked.“There’s another living human here?” He asked Roger.“I have to get to New York!” Mark slept in Jenny’s bed that night, dreaming about talking to another human being.Jenny slept in a stranger’s bed somewhere in Chicago. Mark woke up early, not getting much sleep that night and was anxious to get going again. He had a new hope that Jenny may still be here, he just had to find her.He grabbed Roger and ran back to his Ferrari. The whole way there, he thought about Jenny, and what he would say to her when they met. Jenny on the other hand, was just waking up in Chicago getting ready to continue her drive.“I haven’t seen anyone yet, Nike, I am losing hope.I don’t know what I’ll do if there’s nobody in New York.” After two more days of driving, Jenny could see the top of the Empire State Building in the distance, still no humans.“Nike, we’re in Times Square! There’s no one here so lets just have fun.”And that is what Jenny did for two days straight. She had no restrictions. She went 120 down the main street, drifting on every turn. She slept like a queen in mattress stores, shopped in all the designer stores, golfed from buildings, and rode up and down the Empire State Building elevator at least ten times. Jenny was speeding down Main Street when she saw something ahead. It looked like it was moving. She slowed down a little and as she got closer, it was obvious the figure was moving. It appeared to be a bear standing on its hind legs. No, it couldn’t be, bears are furry. It was a human! Jenny slammed on the breaks and stepped out of the car.She just stood there for a moment staring at Mark.Mark stepped towards her and they slowly came closer. They touched their hands together, making sure that it was real.“Are you Jenny?” Mark asked. “Yes I am.” Jenny replied. “Ready to repopulate America?”
